AT THRESHOLD
Where the future becomes tangible.
Your organization is approaching something consequential.
A major campaign. A transformational gift. A new facility. A signature gathering. A public launch. A strategic shift.
The vision is ambitious. The stakes are high. And suddenly, work that usually lives in separate places—strategy, narrative, creative, experience, communications, fundraising, events, leadership—has to come together.
That is the threshold.
AT THRESHOLD WORKS IN THAT SPACE.
At Threshold is a creative strategy and experience practice for organizations navigating consequential moments—when what comes next needs to become clear, coherent and tangible.
Creative Strategy • Experience Design • Strategic Integration
FROM INTENTION TO EXPRESSION
What happens to an idea as it travels toward reality?
A campaign is not only a fundraising initiative.
A new facility is not only a building.
A transformational gift is not only an announcement.
A signature gathering is not only an event.
Eventually, abstraction has to become specific.
That is often where the unresolved questions become visible.
AT THRESHOLD WORKS IN THAT TERRITORY.
Each becomes a moment in which people encounter what your organization believes, values and is becoming.
Yet bringing that moment to life requires an idea to travel through many decisions, disciplines and forms—across leadership, advancement, communications, creative teams, events, external agencies and partners.
What begins as intention eventually has to become something people can actually encounter. And somewhere along that journey, abstraction has to become specific.
At Threshold brings senior creative strategy, experience design and strategic integration into complex initiatives—working alongside leaders and teams to help an idea travel coherently from what the organization imagines to what people ultimately encounter. Because decisions, narratives, experiences and expressions ultimately shape how the moment is understood and felt.
Senior creative-strategic leadership, when the moment calls for it.
MY SEVEN CREATIVE-STRATEGIC DOMAINS
Senior creative-strategic capacity, shaped to the moment.
No two thresholds require the same combination of leadership and support. At Threshold can step in where senior creative-strategic capacity is needed most.
Creative Strategy & Direction
You have an ambitious vision—but it hasn't yet become a clear creative direction.
Translate strategy into a governing creative idea that gives teams, partners and expressions something coherent to work from.
01
Campaign Strategy & Creative Integration
The campaign is taking shape across many channels, teams and moments—but it needs to feel like one thing.
Connect campaign narrative, creative direction and experience across the journey rather than treating each expression as a separate deliverable.
02
Donor Journey & Experience Design
The relationship matters beyond any single touchpoint.
Shape how donors encounter, understand and experience the organization across communications, recognition, gatherings and significant moments.
03
Major Donor Experiences & Signature Events
The gathering needs to do more than run beautifully.
Design the narrative and experience around the moment so that what people see, hear, feel and remember advances the larger relationship and institutional story.
04
Brand Stewardship & Visual Systems
Many people are producing the work. The expression is beginning to fragment.
Create the principles and systems that allow teams and partners to work with consistency without reducing everything to rigid templates.
05
Capability Building & Team Enablement
The team can execute—but needs stronger shared ways of thinking and working.
Build frameworks, tools and creative practices that strengthen internal capability beyond the engagement itself.
06
Executive Advisory &
Cross-Unit Alignment
Important ideas rarely stay inside one organizational boundary.
Work alongside leaders and teams as an idea moves across functions, partners and forms—surfacing what becomes visible, connecting consequential decisions and helping preserve coherence from intention to expression.
07
SELECTED EXPERIENCE
A practice shaped by
consequential moments
At Threshold is a new expression of a practice developed over nearly two decades inside complex institutions—across capital campaigns, transformational philanthropy, donor recognition, new facilities, research and innovation, signature gatherings and public launches.
The work has ranged from defining creative direction and campaign expression to orchestrating donor experiences across physical, digital, ceremonial and communications touchpoints.
Different moments. Different audiences. The recurring challenge has been the same:
How do you turn an ambitious idea into something people can understand, experience and believe in?
01
02
Capital campaigns across markets and moments
Transformational philanthropy & recognition
Creative strategy and integrated campaign expression across major institutional fundraising initiatives, including donor-facing experiences and gatherings across North America, Europe and Asia.
Orchestrating recognition across physical, digital, ceremonial and communications expressions—helping significant philanthropic relationships become coherent institutional experiences rather than disconnected touchpoints.
03
04
New facilities, research & innovation
Signature gatherings & donor experiences
Helping make ambitious futures tangible through the fundraising, recognition, launch and public expression of new healthcare, research, science, engineering, teaching and learning environments.
Shaping major gatherings as strategic expressions of a larger narrative and relationship—connecting creative direction, recognition, environment, communications and experience around the occasion.
Across the work, the medium changes. The underlying practice remains: connecting strategy, narrative and experience so the whole becomes more coherent than its parts.
FUTURE → NARRATIVE → EXPERIENCE
The future has to become something people can believe in.
Future
Narrative
Experience
What are we making possible?
The strategic ambition behind the work. The change the organization wants to create, the promise it is making, and the future it is asking people to help bring into being.
Why does that future matter?
The meaning that connects ambition to people—shaping how the future is understood, why it matters now, and what role donors, partners, communities and other audiences can play in it.
Organizations often begin ambitious initiatives with an idea of a future they want to create.
But ambition alone isn't enough.
The future needs a narrative people can understand and believe in. And that narrative needs to become an experience people can actually encounter.
How does that future become tangible?
The moments and expressions through which people encounter the idea: communications, environments, gatherings, recognition, digital experiences, creative systems and human interactions.
When Future, Narrative and Experience reinforce one another, a consequential moment becomes more than a collection of deliverables. It becomes a coherent expression of where the organization is going.
That is the work At Threshold helps hold together.

DESIGN AS A WAY OF THINKING
Design follows decisions.
By the time an idea becomes a campaign, event, environment, website or piece of creative, many of the decisions that will determine its coherence have already been made.
Or haven't been made.
At Threshold works upstream as well as downstream—helping surface strategic, narrative and experiential decisions that creative execution will eventually have to carry.
Because beautiful execution cannot compensate for an unresolved idea.
But design can do more than express a decision after it has been made.
We can use design to think.
Complex initiatives ask people to make decisions about futures and experiences that do not yet exist. Design gives us ways to make those possibilities tangible while there is still time to shape them.
We can map a journey. Visualize an ecosystem. Model how a narrative travels across touchpoints. Prototype a pivotal moment. Explore how an idea might behave across communications, environments, gatherings and recognition.
These aren't necessarily finished solutions. They are things we can think with. They allow teams to see relationships previously abstract. Find gaps. Surface contradictions. Test assumptions. Compare possibilities. Make decisions together.
We can prototype the future before asking people to build it.
A future becomes easier to understand when people can encounter pieces of it before the whole thing exists. We can bring together people, place, objects, rituals, stories and encounters to create a provisional world around an emerging idea—something tangible enough to enter, experience, question and refine.
Not a finished future. A version of it we can inhabit long enough to learn from—and believe in enough to invest towards making it real. That might mean prototyping a pivotal donor moment, staging part of a future gathering, exploring how a new institutional narrative behaves in space, or creating enough of an experience for leaders and teams to see what works—and what doesn't.
Because consequential futures rarely become real through vision alone.
They require people willing to commit to them: to champion an idea, participate in it, fund it, make a gift toward it, or imagine their own legacy within what could exist next.
At Threshold doesn't use design only to communicate a future after it has been decided. We use design to help organizations see, test and shape that future while it is still being decided. Tangibility can create the conditions in which belief, agency and commitment become possible.
MY ENGAGEMENT MODELS: WAYS TO WORK TOGETHER
Three ways to work together, shaped to the moment.
Focused Intensive
Some thresholds present a focused question that needs clarity quickly. Others require senior creative-strategic leadership across weeks or months of decisions, teams and moving parts.
At Threshold engagements are shaped around the complexity of the moment, the capability already inside your organization, and where additional leadership will make the greatest difference.
For a consequential question that needs concentrated attention.
A short, high-focus engagement around a defined challenge—such as clarifying creative direction, diagnosing fragmentation, mapping an experience or ecosystem, pressure-testing a narrative, prototyping a possible direction, or aligning an initiative before execution accelerates.
TYPICALLY 1–2 WEEKS.
For a consequential moment that needs a coherent direction.
A deeper engagement across Future, Narrative and Experience—helping clarify the governing idea, map the larger system, make possibilities visible, and connect decisions across functions.
The direction can then be made tangible through a focused set of high-leverage creative expressions—such as key art, signature experience concepts or governing visual elements—designed to establish a standard that internal teams, agencies and partners can carry forward.
The result is not simply a recommendation. It is a direction people can see, understand and build from.
TYPICALLY 6 WEEKS.
Strategic Engagement
Embedded Strategic Engagement
For a consequential initiative that needs senior creative-strategic capacity inside the work.
At Threshold works alongside leadership, internal teams and external partners through an extended period of development—providing creative direction, experience leadership and strategic integration as the initiative moves from ambition toward expression.
That can include ongoing mapping, prototyping, and creative decision-making as the work evolves—helping the organization see the coherent whole while many people are responsible for making its parts.
Where useful, At Threshold can also design the highest-leverage creative expressions—such as key art, signature experience concepts or governing visual systems—then remain involved as internal teams, agencies and partners extend them across channels, helping steward the creative direction as the work evolves.
TYPICALLY 12 WEEKS.
Starting with a gathering?
A signature gathering can be one of the clearest places to see the larger experience at work.
At Threshold looks beyond the event itself to the narrative, donor journey, recognition, environment, communications and relationships surrounding it—helping the gathering become a strategic expression of the larger moment.
The event is not the whole experience. It is one consequential moment within it.

MEET MARIE FE
Marie Fe del Rosario
Principal, Creative Strategy & Experience
I learned to look upstream.
I'm Marie Fe del Rosario, a creative strategist and experience designer whose practice has been shaped by nearly two decades working inside complex institutions.
I began, unmistakably, as a designer. And I still am one. But over time, the questions I found myself asking moved further and further upstream. Not only:
What should this look like?
But:
What are we actually trying to make possible?
What does this need to mean?
What should someone understand, feel or do differently because of it?
How does one moment connect to everything around it?
And what decisions need to be made before anyone starts designing the deliverables?
Those questions changed my practice.
For much of my career, I've worked where ambitious institutional ideas become public and tangible: capital campaigns, transformational philanthropy, donor recognition, new facilities, research and innovation, major gatherings and launches.
I've worked across the things people eventually encounter—the campaign, the environment, the event, the recognition, the communication, the digital expression.
But increasingly, I'm interested in what it takes for ambitious ideas to remain coherent all the way from organizational imagination to lived expression.
The governing idea.
The narrative.
The journey.
The decisions made upstream.
The translations made along the way.
The relationships between moments.
What ultimately survives into the experience.
At Threshold grew from that space.
Again and again, I saw highly capable people responsible for different parts of an important initiative—while the idea itself had to travel between them, changing hands, disciplines and forms along the way.
Strategy lived somewhere.
Narrative somewhere else.
Creative somewhere else.
The event somewhere else.
The donor or audience experienced all of it.
Seeing what happened along that journey changed how I understood the role of design.
I use design as a way to help make better decisions in the first place.
To map what is difficult to see.
To make an emerging idea tangible.
To prototype possibilities before they become expensive realities.
To help people experience enough of a possible future that they can think about it together.
And ultimately, to help an organization carry an idea coherently from Future → Narrative → Experience.
My work has followed consequential ideas.
Across institutional advancement, research, healthcare, education and innovation, much of my career has accompanied the development, funding, launch and public expression of ideas about what could exist next.
That is the thread I can see clearly now.
At Threshold brings that experience together as a senior creative-strategic practice for organizations approaching moments when their future needs to become tangible.
I work in the territory between imagining and making.
And that, perhaps, is what a threshold is.
Tell me about your threshold.
What are you approaching?
Perhaps it's already clearly defined: a campaign, a new facility, a transformational gift, a gathering, a launch.
Or perhaps you can simply feel that something consequential is taking shape—and the usual ways of working aren't quite enough for what comes next.
Tell me what you're approaching.
You don't need to arrive with a brief or know exactly what kind of engagement you need.
Tell me about the moment. Why it matters. What's already in motion. Where things feel clear—and where they don't.
We'll begin there.
THE THRESHOLD FILES
Field notes from the territory between imagining and making.
Some questions deserve more than a post.
The Threshold Files are an evolving collection of observations, frameworks, field studies and provocations from the work of At Threshold.
They explore questions like:
How does an ambitious future become something people can actually believe in?
What can we prototype before we commit to building?
Where do narrative, experience and organizational decisions begin to pull apart?
What changes when we treat a campaign, facility, gathering or gift not as an isolated deliverable—but as part of a larger experience?
Some Files will examine patterns I've encountered in practice. Others will explore ideas emerging across design, philanthropy, experience, innovation and organizational life. All begin with the same curiosity:
What can we see differently while the future is still being made?
Receive new Files as they're released.
